About the Author(s)

JOSEPH R. OPPONG is associate professor of geography at the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton Texas, and a native of Ghana. He has about 16 years university teaching experience in Ghana, Canada, and the United States. Oppong has served as chair of the Africa Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers and is currently chair of the Medical Geography Specialty Group. His research focuses on medical geography: the geography of disease and health care. Joseph has four children: Esther, Daniel, Lydia, and Joseph David. Joseph enjoys research, photography, and teaching, especially taking university students on a life-transforming summer study abroad in Ghana.

Series editor CHARLES F. ("FRITZ") GRITZNER is distinguished professor emeritus of geography at South Dakota University in Brookings. During a half-century of college teaching, he taught more than 70 different courses spanning the fields of physical, cultural, regional, and historical geography. Gritzner has served as both president and executive director of the National Council for Geographic Education and has received the council's highest honor, the George J. Miller Award for Distinguished Service. He also received the Distinguished Teaching and Gilbert M. Grosvenor Honors for Geographic Education awards from the American Association of Geographers.
