Summary

In the early 1800s, some Americans favored freeing enslaved blacks and sending them to Africa, where they could settle their own colonies. Supporters of the colonization movement argued that whites and blacks would never get along and that this plan would enable African Americans to both live in freedom and spread "civilization" and Christianity throughout Africa. Many opponents of colonization argued that it was impractical and wrongheaded and that African Americans were entitled to live in freedom in the United States. Other critics opposed any end to slavery. Was the colonization of black Americans a good idea in the 19th century?

This eBook examines the colonization movement and delves into the pro and con arguments that surrounded it. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, a "Learn More About" chapter with more information on the topic, and a "What If" chapter speculating on what might have happened had the colonization movement succeeded.
