Summary

Praise for the previous edition:

"An excellent addition."—School Library Journal

"This is the best encyclopedia on evolution this reviewer has ever seen. It is up-to-date and has plenty of entries and illustrations, but it has something else none of the others do—a central voice with character, enthusiasm, and courage...This encyclopedia is well crafted and comprehensive...It should be a required text on the shelves of science writers. This volume is highly recommended."—American Reference Books Annual

"Written in an engaging style at a level accessible to a nonspecialist audience...A unique feature of this encyclopedia is the inclusion of five essays, written by the author, that explore particularly interesting topics related to evolutionary science...Notable for its accessibility, the volume is recommended for high-school, public, and undergraduate academic libraries."—Booklist

"This is an excellent reference work more appropriate for its target audience than is the [competition]...Highly recommended for all types of libraries."—Library Journal

"It is not often that one reads an encyclopedia from cover to cover, but this task was more enjoyable...There is much to commend this book...coverage is broad, interesting, relevant, and informative...I wholeheartedly recommend this book..."—Reports of the National Center for Science Education

"...well-written...readable entries...valuable...Recommended."—Choice

"...would be a fine addition to any teacher's library. It would also be appropriate for the layperson who would like to explore the subject of evolution in more detail. The author writes in an engaging style..."—Plant Science Bulletin

"...unique and useful...[an] essential tool."—SLJ Curriculum Connections

"This superb reference will be the first one to pull from the shelf to answer a question about evolution...Reference librarians will not be disappointed in this resource, whether for the interested nonscientist or the budding young scientist...This reviewer would like to see Rice's contribution in every high school library for student use and for the professional shelf in the middle school library."—VOYA

Evolutionary science encompasses not only some of the greatest breakthroughs of modern science, but also the most controversial.

Encyclopedia of Evolution, Revised Edition contains hundreds of entries that span modern evolutionary science and the history of its development. This comprehensive volume clarifies many common misconceptions about evolution, including whether the process of evolution has been observed; biological evidence from DNA; and whether any "missing links" have been found.

Biographical entries represent evolutionary scientists who have had and continue to have a major impact on the broad outline of this field. Five essays that explore interesting questions resulting from studies in evolutionary science are included as well.

The five essays are:

  • How much do genes control human behavior?
  • What are the "ghosts of evolution"?
  • Can an evolutionary scientist be religious?
  • Human aging, death and evolution
  • Are humans alone in the universe?

New or substantially updated articles include:

  • Adaptation and evolution
  • Biodiversity and evolution
  • Evolution and altruism
  • Intelligent design
  • Neanderthals
  • Snowball Earth
