Summary

William Claiborne established settlements on Kent Island, and Leonard Calvert settled at Saint Mary's City. Maryland opens with a general introduction discussing early explorers, American Indian civilizations in existence before the arrival of Europeans, and more. It goes on to discuss early exploration and details about life in the early colony, from how tobacco became the colony's primary crop to the popular one-room cabins built by farmers. Maryland also covers the battles and events of the Revolutionary War, such as the Battle of Brandywine, and Chesapeake Bay's role as a home to numerous privateers who attacked British ships during the war.

Sidebars include:

  • The land granted to the Calverts on June 20, 1632
  • Baltimore Iron Works
  • Margaret Brent
  • Committees of Correspondence
  • Liberty Tree
  • Slavery in Maryland.
