Summary

The 1990s was a lively and stormy decade. It was a time of great cultural change, from the spread of the Internet to the rise of Generation X. On the economic front, both a recession and the longest boom in the nation's history occurred. For most of the 1990s, the United States was at peace, but events such as the Persian Gulf War and the first impeachment of a U.S. president in more than a century made life more tumultuous.

America in the 1990s covers everything from the riots in Los Angeles to the war in the Persian Gulf to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson. Chapter-by-chapter coverage guides young readers through the last decade of the 20th century. More than 100 photographs, as well as pull-out facts and quotations, make this volume an inviting and user-friendly guide, perfect for upper elementary and junior high school students. Coverage includes:

  • The end of the presidency of George H.W. Bush and the presidency of Bill Clinton
  • The Clarence Thomas, Anita Hill hearing
  • The popularization of grunge music and Lollapalooza
  • The Columbine High School shootings
  • The debate over Elián Gonzales
  • Magic Johnson's retirement from sports after he was found to be HIV positive
  • The first Million Man March
  • The Y2K scare.
