Formerly the managing editor of Eastern Washington University Press, Oakes has worked as a freelance writer and editor for more than a decade, specializing in reference and educational materials. She is the author of more than 15 books, including Facts On File's Resources for People with Disabilities: A National Directory, Encyclopedia of World Scientists, and the International Encyclopedia of Women Scientists.
