Summary

In 1536, De Soto became rich when he helped lead the Spanish conquest of the Inca empire in South America. He continued his explorations through what is today the southern United States, seeking gold and glory. He and his men wandered through a large area, discovering the Mississippi River along the way. Although he did not succeed in his quest for gold in the New World, his name lives on.
