Summary

Stephen Douglas was a skillful politician and great orator, possibly best known for his debates against Abraham Lincoln when the two ran for the same seat in the U.S. Senate. Douglas was also involved in the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1853, both of which affected the debate over slavery as the country headed for civil war.
