Summary

The transatlantic slave trade forcibly brought thousands of Africans to the Americas. In doing so, it had an impact on peoples and cultures around the globe. Many of the Africans taken captive did not survive the treacherous voyage from Africa to the Americas, and those who did endured terror under their masters. Slaves became one part of an elaborate trade network for such goods as cotton and rum, which were shipped across the Atlantic to different participating countries. From the set Slavery in the Americas, The Slave Trade explores this intriguing time in American history more thoroughly.

Topics include:

  • The beginning of slavery in North America
  • The development of slavery in Central and South America
  • The Commercial Revolution and its impact on slavery
  • The Middle Passage and high death rate of transported slaves
  • The international slave trade
  • The illegal continuation of the slave trade.
